Solving One-Step Equations

A one-step equation is an equation you can solve with a single move. In x+8=3x + 8 = 3, something was added to the variable; in 4x=36-4x = 36, the variable was multiplied by something. Either way, one operation stands between you and the answer, and your job is to reverse it.

The rule that makes it work: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. An equation is a balance. Apply the opposite operation to both sides and the variable comes out alone, still balanced against its value.

The one move: opposite operations

Every operation has an opposite. The opposite of addition is subtraction, and the opposite of subtraction is addition. The opposite of multiplication is division, and the opposite of division is multiplication.

Look at what's being done to the variable, then do the opposite to both sides. If the equation says x+8x + 8, subtract 88 from both sides. If it says x5x - 5, add 55 to both sides. If it says 4x-4x, divide both sides by 4-4. If it says x3\dfrac{x}{3}, multiply both sides by 33.

After the move, one side is just the variable and the other side is the answer.

Fraction coefficients: multiply by the reciprocal

When the coefficient is a fraction, as in 25x=10\dfrac{2}{5}x = 10, the fastest move is to multiply both sides by the reciprocal — flip the fraction. Multiplying by 52\dfrac{5}{2} turns the left side into 1x1x, because 5225=1\dfrac{5}{2} \cdot \dfrac{2}{5} = 1. The right side becomes 1052=2510 \cdot \dfrac{5}{2} = 25.

This is one move instead of two: you could divide by 22 and multiply by 55 separately, but the reciprocal does both at once.

Watch the signs

Two sign traps show up constantly. First, a negative coefficient: solving 4x=36-4x = 36 means dividing both sides by 4-4, not 44, so the answer is x=9x = -9. Second, a small result: x+8=3x + 8 = 3 gives x=38=5x = 3 - 8 = -5. There's nothing wrong with a negative answer — plug it back in and check: 5+8=3-5 + 8 = 3.

Worked examples

Example 1: reverse a subtraction

Solve x7=12x - 7 = 12.

Start with the equationx7=12x - 7 = 12
The opposite of subtracting 77 is adding 77 — add it to both sidesx=19x = 19
Check: 197=1219 - 7 = 12

Answer: x=19x = 19

Example 2: reverse a multiplication

Solve 5x=305x = -30.

Start with the equation5x=305x = -30
The variable is multiplied by 55, so divide both sides by 55x=6x = -6

Answer: x=6x = -6

Example 3: reverse a division

Solve x3=4\dfrac{x}{3} = -4.

Start with the equationx3=4\dfrac{x}{3} = -4
The variable is divided by 33, so multiply both sides by 33x=12x = -12

Answer: x=12x = -12

Example 4: a fraction coefficient

Solve 23x=8\dfrac{2}{3}x = 8.

Start with the equation23x=8\dfrac{2}{3}x = 8
Multiply both sides by the reciprocal, 32\dfrac{3}{2}x=832x = 8 \cdot \dfrac{3}{2}
Simplifyx=12x = 12

Answer: x=12x = 12

Common questions

How do I know which operation to reverse?

Look at what's happening to the variable right now. If a number is added to it, subtract that number from both sides. If it's multiplied by a number, divide both sides by that number. The equation tells you the move.

Why do I have to do the same thing to both sides?

Because the two sides are equal. If you change only one side, they stop being equal and the equation breaks. Matching moves on both sides keep the balance while you simplify.

What if the variable is on the right side, like 14=x+614 = x + 6?

Nothing changes. Subtract 66 from both sides to get 8=x8 = x, which means x=8x = 8. An equation reads the same in both directions.

How do I check my answer?

Substitute it back into the original equation. If both sides come out equal, you're done. It takes seconds and catches almost every sign slip.
