Solving One-Step Equations
A one-step equation is an equation you can solve with a single move. In , something was added to the variable; in , the variable was multiplied by something. Either way, one operation stands between you and the answer, and your job is to reverse it.
The rule that makes it work: whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. An equation is a balance. Apply the opposite operation to both sides and the variable comes out alone, still balanced against its value.
The one move: opposite operations
Every operation has an opposite. The opposite of addition is subtraction, and the opposite of subtraction is addition. The opposite of multiplication is division, and the opposite of division is multiplication.
Look at what's being done to the variable, then do the opposite to both sides. If the equation says , subtract from both sides. If it says , add to both sides. If it says , divide both sides by . If it says , multiply both sides by .
After the move, one side is just the variable and the other side is the answer.
Fraction coefficients: multiply by the reciprocal
When the coefficient is a fraction, as in , the fastest move is to multiply both sides by the reciprocal — flip the fraction. Multiplying by turns the left side into , because . The right side becomes .
This is one move instead of two: you could divide by and multiply by separately, but the reciprocal does both at once.

How do I know which operation to reverse?
Look at what's happening to the variable right now. If a number is added to it, subtract that number from both sides. If it's multiplied by a number, divide both sides by that number. The equation tells you the move.
Why do I have to do the same thing to both sides?
Because the two sides are equal. If you change only one side, they stop being equal and the equation breaks. Matching moves on both sides keep the balance while you simplify.
What if the variable is on the right side, like ?
Nothing changes. Subtract from both sides to get , which means . An equation reads the same in both directions.
How do I check my answer?
