Reading Qualitative Graphs

A qualitative graph tells a story with its shape instead of exact numbers. There is no scale to read — the question is what happens: a section that rises shows the quantity increasing, a flat section shows it holding steady, and a falling section shows it decreasing.

Reading one is a translation job. Move left to right, break the graph into sections wherever the direction or steepness changes, and turn each section into a sentence about the story. Do that in order and matching a graph to its story becomes routine.

The three section shapes

Rising: the quantity on the vertical axis is increasing. Flat: it is staying constant — not zero, just unchanging. Falling: it is decreasing.

Always check what the vertical axis measures before you translate. A flat section on a distance graph means the person stopped moving; a flat section on a speed graph means the person kept moving at a constant speed. Same shape, very different stories.

Steepness shows how fast

The steeper a section, the faster the quantity is changing. A steep rise on a height graph means climbing quickly; a gentle fall means descending slowly.

Two rising sections can also tell different stories. A graph that rises steeply and then keeps rising less steeply shows something still growing, just more slowly than before — not stopped, and not shrinking.

Read it section by section

The graph below shows a walker's distance from home. It rises from zero, holds flat, then falls gently back to zero. Translated in order: the walker heads away from home, stops for a while, then walks back home — more slowly than they left, because the falling section is less steep than the rising one.

Worked examples

Example 1: tell the story of a distance graph

A graph of a jogger's distance from home rises steeply, stays flat, then falls back to zero. What happened?

Rising section — distance from home is growing: the jogger heads away
Flat section — distance is not changing: the jogger stops to rest
Falling section — distance shrinks to zero: the jogger returns home

Answer: The jogger runs away from home, rests, then returns home.

Example 2: the same shape on a speed graph

A graph of a car's speed rises, stays flat, then falls to zero. What happened?

The vertical axis is speed, not distance
Rising — the car speeds up
Flat — the car holds a constant speed; it is still moving
Falling to zero — the car slows down and stops

Answer: The car speeds up, cruises at a steady speed, then brakes to a stop.

Example 3: two rising sections

A graph of a plant's height rises steeply for the first month, then keeps rising but less steeply. What does that say about the growth?

Both sections rise, so the plant is growing the whole time
The steep section shows fast growth
The gentler section shows growth continuing at a slower pace

Answer: The plant grows quickly at first, then keeps growing more slowly — it never stops growing.

Common questions

Does a flat section always mean something stopped?

No — it means the quantity on the vertical axis stopped changing. On a distance graph that is a person standing still, but on a speed graph a flat section is a constant speed, and on a temperature graph it is a steady temperature.

What does a falling section on a distance-from-home graph mean?

The distance is shrinking, so the person is getting closer to home. It does not mean walking backward — it means heading back toward the starting point.

How do I match a story to one of several graphs?

Break the story into events, turn each event into a shape — rise, flat, or fall, steep or gentle — and check the shapes in order. Eliminate any graph that misses an event or puts the shapes in the wrong order.

Do I need exact numbers to read these graphs?

No. Qualitative means the shape carries the meaning. Direction tells you increasing, constant, or decreasing, and steepness tells you how fast — no scale required.
