One-Step Equations (Add / Subtract)

A one-step equation is an equation you can solve in a single move. Equations like x+7=12x + 7 = 12 or 4m=284m = 28 have exactly one thing happening to the variable — a number was added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided. Your job is to reverse that one operation and read off the answer.

One-step equations are where equation solving starts. Every harder equation — two-step, multi-step, equations with variables on both sides — eventually boils down to a chain of these single moves. Get comfortable here and everything after it gets easier.

The one move: use the opposite operation

Look at what is being done to the variable, then do the opposite to both sides. The opposite of adding is subtracting, and the opposite of subtracting is adding. The opposite of multiplying is dividing, and the opposite of dividing is multiplying.

So in x+7=12x + 7 = 12, the equation adds 77 — you subtract 77 from both sides. In 4m=284m = 28, the variable is multiplied by 44 — you divide both sides by 44. One move, and the variable is alone.

Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. An equation is a balance: the same move on both sides keeps it balanced, and that's what makes the answer valid.

Reading the equation correctly

The most common early mistake is misreading which operation is happening. x+6x + 6 means 66 is added. x4x - 4 means 44 is subtracted. 3x3x means xx is multiplied by 33 — no symbol between a number and a variable always means multiplication. And x5\dfrac{x}{5} means xx is divided by 55.

Once you name the operation out loud — "xx is being multiplied by 33" — the move that solves it is automatic: divide both sides by 33.

Negative answers are normal

Don't panic if the answer comes out negative. In x+9=4x + 9 = 4, subtracting 99 from both sides gives x=5x = -5 — a perfectly good answer. Check it: 5+9=4-5 + 9 = 4. If your last move divides by a negative number, slow down and track the sign: 5x=35-5x = 35 gives x=7x = -7, not 77.

Worked examples

Example 1: a number is added

Solve x+7=12x + 7 = 12.

Start with the equationx+7=12x + 7 = 12
The opposite of adding 77 is subtracting 77 — do it to both sidesx=5x = 5
Check: 5+7=125 + 7 = 12

Answer: x=5x = 5

Example 2: a number is subtracted

Solve y6=10y - 6 = 10.

Start with the equationy6=10y - 6 = 10
The opposite of subtracting 66 is adding 66 — add it to both sidesy=16y = 16
Check: 166=1016 - 6 = 10

Answer: y=16y = 16

Example 3: a negative coefficient

Solve 5m=30-5m = 30.

Start with the equation5m=30-5m = 30
The variable is multiplied by 5-5, so divide both sides by 5-5 — keep the signm=6m = -6
Check: 5(6)=30-5(-6) = 30

Answer: m=6m = -6

Example 4: the variable is divided

Solve x3=9\dfrac{x}{3} = 9.

Start with the equationx3=9\dfrac{x}{3} = 9
The variable is divided by 33, so multiply both sides by 33x=27x = 27
Check: 273=9\dfrac{27}{3} = 9

Answer: x=27x = 27

Common questions

How do I know whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide?

Name what the equation is doing to the variable, then do the opposite to both sides. If the equation adds 88, you subtract 88. If the variable is multiplied by 66, you divide by 66. There is always exactly one operation to reverse in a one-step equation.

What if the variable is on the right side, like 15=x+815 = x + 8?

Nothing changes — solve it the same way. Subtract 88 from both sides to get 7=x7 = x, which is the same statement as x=7x = 7. The variable being on the right doesn't affect any of the moves.

What if the answer is a fraction?

That's allowed. If 4x=104x = 10, dividing both sides by 44 gives x=104=52x = \dfrac{10}{4} = \dfrac{5}{2}. A reduced fraction is a complete, correct answer — you don't need to force it into a whole number.
