One-Step Equations (Add / Subtract)
A one-step equation is an equation you can solve in a single move. Equations like or have exactly one thing happening to the variable — a number was added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided. Your job is to reverse that one operation and read off the answer.
One-step equations are where equation solving starts. Every harder equation — two-step, multi-step, equations with variables on both sides — eventually boils down to a chain of these single moves. Get comfortable here and everything after it gets easier.
The one move: use the opposite operation
Look at what is being done to the variable, then do the opposite to both sides. The opposite of adding is subtracting, and the opposite of subtracting is adding. The opposite of multiplying is dividing, and the opposite of dividing is multiplying.
So in , the equation adds — you subtract from both sides. In , the variable is multiplied by — you divide both sides by . One move, and the variable is alone.
Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other. An equation is a balance: the same move on both sides keeps it balanced, and that's what makes the answer valid.
Reading the equation correctly
The most common early mistake is misreading which operation is happening. means is added. means is subtracted. means is multiplied by — no symbol between a number and a variable always means multiplication. And means is divided by .
Once you name the operation out loud — " is being multiplied by " — the move that solves it is automatic: divide both sides by .
Negative answers are normal
Don't panic if the answer comes out negative. In , subtracting from both sides gives — a perfectly good answer. Check it: . If your last move divides by a negative number, slow down and track the sign: gives , not .

How do I know whether to add, subtract, multiply, or divide?
